Can We Control Our Inner Voice?

To some, it might be their dearest friend and to others, their greatest enemy. Throughout our lives, I wonder if we might find anyone nearly as critical and influential to us as our inner voice. No really, think about it. Those moments when you are confronted with your own aloneness and individuality, it is your inner voice that guides(or misguides you) to take the leap of action that might make or break you. Those tense moments at the exam hall, those few moments before a public speech or a presentation, those murky moments in the night you spend staring at the ceiling. Isn’t it our inner voice that constantly gives us company during times of conflict and solitude?

Now that we’ve established how important a force our inner voice is in guiding our actions, we must confront the question, what exactly is this inner voice? Fortunately, there are tons of answers to this question but unfortunately, there are so many I just don't know which one to pick. From Freud’s psychoanalytic theory to the Indian philosophy of paramathma, there are various concepts dealing with the inner voice and explaining the monologue we have with it. I personally believe that the inner voice is a very unique part of our consciousness that is a combined version of our cognitive abilities including our emotions, rationality, past experiences, present experiences, our environment and intuition. But truth be told, this is a very complex and tricky concept with so many ideas that finding a theory that explains what you feel is entirely up to you and may be different for different people.

As I mentioned earlier, our inner voice could be the beacon of our hope as well as the vessel of our destruction depending on how we use it. Yes, you heard me right. On how we use it. It might be difficult to believe sometimes but trust me, we yield a great amount of control over our inner voice. If the inner voice is simply an echo of how we think and what we surround ourselves with, I can allow myself to make an assumption that it is completely in our hands to control it. Well, at least I hope I can.

So yes, I do believe that we hold the key to influencing our thoughts. Especially our inner voice. And by effectively rewiring our thought patterns and surrounding ourselves with a positive and friendly environment, we can unleash the potential our inner voice has stored for us.
